![]() Freddy Vargas was born in San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic in 1969. During his childhood, his favorite form of entertainment was the town's only movie theatre where for 30 cents he could watch a double feature of Mexican classics, Martial Art films, and cartoons. At the age of 18, Vargas migrated to New York City where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from St. John's University. While at St. John's, Vargas wrote, produced and directed the award-winning short films Uptown, which won Best Student Film in 1994 and Victor in 1995, which won a number of awards at the University's 9th Annual Film and Video Competition, including Best Film, Best Writing, and Best Editing. Victor went on to win the Golden Plaque Award at the Chicago International Film Festival, and the Audience Award at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. Vargas’ third short film, Alex was an autobiographical short in which he played the lead role. Apart from his own films, Vargas has worked on the production of I Like it Like That, a Columbia Pictures release featuring Lauren Velez from "New York Undercover" fame and latin music star Jerry Rivera. Shortly after, he worked as production manager on Destination Unknown, an award-winning independent film directed by Nestor Miranda and shot entirely on location in Queens, NY. Vargas also co-wrote and produced In Search of a Dream (Buscando un Sueño), his first feature screenplay. Most recently, Freddy Vargas wrote and directed "Rice & Beans" and "Greenbacks", two episodes of the "Once Upon A Ride" latin drama series developed in the BFF DV Lab. The series is based on the film Destination Unknown and is produced by Nestor Miranda and Diana Duque of Mira Productions. Currently, Vargas is working on the writing and development of his feature directorial debut, the Spanish language period piece La Nostalgia de la Nada. Speaker Fee $ 3000 |
